    Ratings Systems

    Merch Rating
Cold hard cash -- merch (merchandise) says it all, right? This is pretty arbitrary, but includes whether I would go to the show, buy the next album, buy a t-shirt at the show, get the band's old albums, etc.

    CD Placement Rating
This is more structured but steeped in geekdom.

    - Car iPod = Best new
    - Portable CD Case = Great or VG
    - CD Rack = Good
    - Sell-Back 1 = Good to bad with some tracks worth keeping
    - Pile of Death = A complete mistake, no redeeming value

    The Compilation Ripoff Index
    This consists of two components:

    - The casual fan summary (which ideally has a high index - all the "hits" are included)
    - The hardcore fan ripoff factor (which ideally has a low index - there is some real value for the completist)

Unfortunately, it's usually the other way around.
